DOUBLE CROSSED HAT

copyright © 04/24/2004 Dot Matthews

07/02/04 This pattern has now been tested and corrections have been made in blue. I want to thank CatBookMom, aka Barbara, who took the time to identify the errors and email me with suggestions for corrections. Thank you so much Barbara, I appreciate your help.

This is my original pattern, I labored over every stitch, and wrote it all down as I went. I frogged it so many times I nearly wore out the yarn. That being said, please feel free to use this pattern in any way you want. I only ask that you give me credit (or blame me) for writing it, and pictures would be nice if you want to share.

Materials: I used ww cotton and a K hook.
Hat is worked holding 3 strands together.
Ch 3 counts as 1st st on every row.  Do not turn rows unless instructed to do so.

ROW 1: Ch 4, 11 dc in 1st ch, join in top of beg ch. (12 sts)

ROW 2: Ch 3, dc in same space as joining, 2 dc in ea st around. Join in top of beg ch. (24 sts.)

ROW 3: Ch 3, dc in same st as joining. (dc in next st, 2 dc in next st)around. Join in top of beg ch. (36 sts)

ROW 4: Ch 3, dc in same st as joining, (dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) around, join in top of beg ch. (48 sts)

ROW 5: Ch 3, dc in st to the right of the join (that's in the last dc of the previous row) sk next dc, dc in next st, dc in skipped st (that's the stitch you just skipped NOTE: this forms a crossed dc ), now working forward again, sk next dc, dc in next st, dc in skipped st around. Join in top of beg ch 3 (24 crossed stitch groups)

ROW 6: Repeat row 5

Row 7: Repeat row 5

Row 8: Ch 2 (counts as 1st Hdc), Hdc in ea st around. Join in top of beg ch 2(48 sts)

Working in back loop only
Row 9: ch 1, turn. Work in back loop only, (2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st) repeat around. Join in 1st sc. turn (72 sts)

Row 10: (do not ch 1) work in back loop, only sl st in next 21 sts
Now, work in both loops, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 20 sts, sc in next 5 sts,
Now work in back loops only, sl st in next 21 sts around. Do not join, and do not turn. Mark beginning st with contrasting yarn or a stitch marker. (72 sts)

Row 11: Repeat row 10. (72 sts)

Row 12: Work in back loop only, sl st in next 21sts,
Now work in both loops, sc in next 5 sts,
(1 Hdc in next st, 2 Hdc in next st) repeat 9 times, sc in next 5 sts.

I love this hat pattern. I first worked it up in a softer yarn and it was like a floppy hat, like you said. Still very cute, though.
I now want to do it in the cotton you suggest...which brand/kind of cotton do I use?
I have some Peaches & Creme (like dishcloth yarn), would this work? Would it fit 3 strands? It seems a bit thick already.
Thanks for your patterns...love them!
ps...I am making these for my sister-in-law who was just diagnosed with cancer (she has lost her hair from chemo).

Dot everyone loves this pattern, even my husband. I'm working on the second one for him. I've made changes on both of the ones I've done. And congratulations on your patterns in the new crochet book. I really appreciate you making your patterns free of charge and available to us. My family is on a fixed income that doesn't allow us to do much. But every now and then I'm able to purchase yarns now. A luxury I took for granted when I had a high paying job, which is no longer here. Thanks, Again.

Dear Dot~ I love you hat patterns! My granddaughter wants a brimmed hat and your DOUBLED CROSSED HAT is similar to the hat she saw in a Hannah Anderson catalog. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks so much for sharing your website with me. I am so glad I found you in my search for this hat.

Hi. I just wondered if I could take this pattern and make changes to it to make a newsboy hat for my sister in law's little girl. I think it would be possble. The hat is perfect except for the brim. You would just have to make it a little less big. Please let me know it this would be allright with you. I would not post this pattern anywhere, but keep it for my own use.
Thank you for your large selection of patterns!

I need a wardrobe of chemo caps for my SIL. She has a high profile job, where baseball caps and tied scarves are not considered proper dress attire. She just survived a bilateral mastectomy They are doing radiation abd chemo to make sure they get it all. Ladieslipper,(Paula)

Just found your site, love it but would like to be able to print patterns without all the extras as it uses up my paper too fast. Any help with this. You all take care.

This hat relies on the bulk of the yarn to hold it's shape. If you use a lighter yarn it will be a floppy hat.

Would this hat work with sport weight yarn for a summer sun hat??

Thank you for the new poncho pattern. I am working it up tonight and it is just right to be lacy enough for my DD Flo. She wanted me to do it in thread but NOT.
I am doing in in Simply Soft baby yarn by Caron 3 ply and a J hook.
The color is Pinkie as she likes pink.
You are such a great designer.
Please stop by and read my journal. I did have Blogger but couldn't work it so went to AOL Journal and get along fine with that.
Again thank you and God Bless You

Hi Elaine, I'm replying to your comments here because I don't want people to think I'm ignoring you. In emails, we decided that you would try to modify this hat on your own so it would fit your needs. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

I recently joined the Red Hat Society and have been searching for a hat to make for myself. The problem I've been running into is that I have extremely long and very thick hair and nothing will fit over it. I did see your pony tail hat and might make that. I really like this hat because it's more of a year 'round hat and wonder if there's a way to modify it to accomodate a pony tail....something like the opening at the back of a baseball hat? If not, I understand, but I figured no harm in asking

Thanks for this hat. I have made it for my sisters because they loved it so much and my friend's grandmother. I added a row of the cross stitch to make it deeper. I hope that is okay making changes to you design. Thank you.

Hi Carolyn, I'm glad you like the site and I hope you enjoy the patterns. I don't know how many skeins this hat take because I made it from a cone I had and I just wound off 3 large balls and worked from that. I can tell you that my hat weighs 6 oz. I hope this helps you.
