PONY TAIL HAT

Copyright © 2004 Dot Matthews

The following is my original pattern. If you have questions, please email me at bythehook7647@yahoo.com and I will try to answer your questions. If you find errors in the pattern, please let me know and I will make corrections.
Dot Matthews, 04/02/04

I used an H hook and WW yarn. And 2 Small rubber bands

Rnd 1) make 18 sc around a rubber band, join in back loop of first sc.

NOTE: beginning ch 3 counts as 1st dc.

Rnd 2) working in back loop only for this round, ch 3, 1 dc in same space as join, 2 dc in each st, around, join (total sts = 36)

Rnd 3) ch 3, dc in same space as join, (dc in next st, 2 dc in next st) repeat around, join
(total sts = 54)

picture shows first 3 rounds.

Rnd 4 - 8 ) ch 3, dc in each st.around, join (total sts for each round = 54)

Rnd 9 - 13) ch 1, sc in each st around, join

Rnd 14) ch 2, sl st in next st, * ch 2, sk next st, sl st in next st* repeat from * around, join
Fasten off and weave in ends.

pictures before adding poof on top

POOF at the top of the hat:

These stitches are worked in the unworked loops of round one.

Attach yarn in any unworked loop of round one.

picture shows where to attach yarn for the poof.

(Ch 10, sl st in same stitch) 3 times

sl st in next st, (ch 10, sl st in same stitch) 3 times. Continue around, having 3 ch 10’s and 4 sl sts in each stitch.

If you want a fuller “poof” do 4 chain 10’s instead of 3 in each stitch. If you want a bigger “poof”, chain 15 or 20 instead of 10.

dear dot,
I just ADORE your Eastwoodly Hat, I am on my 10th one, all in different colors and I add a big flower on the side and they look just beautiful...I just luv the wide, wide brim!! I want to make this same pattern for Summer, so thought I'd use one strand of 4 ply yarn and cotton thread! it seems to work out just great, Dot. I am DESPERATELY looking for a pattern of a crochet peak hat... can you help? if so, pls send me it at s.dorton@sympatico.ca

Thanks so much for this pattern. you are so talented, a real genius.
I hope you are keeping in good health.
sincerely

Hi. I found your patterns from a link at Christinascrochethaven.com I have been trying to make her pattern alled the half-a-ponytail hat which is similar to this one of yours. I have been pulling my hair out on this! I don't find anywhere to e-mail for help on her website...so I was hoping I could ask you. My daughter really wants me to make this for her but it just isn't working with the directions. It's coming out bumpy (like too many stitches around from the get go). Her pattern says to sc in the hairband 23 times. Maybe I could e-mail you a picture? I'm hoping for some assistance :) I think I want to try your pattern for the ponytail hat as well...but at this point I'm afraid to start anything new that says "ponytail" LOL So if you have a few spare minutes...maybe you could e-mail me. And all your creations are wonderful!! I'm going to look more!

Hi Camille, I'd rate this hat at easy/intermediate because of crocheting over a ponytail holder or rubberband and also because of working in the unused loops to form the poof at the top.

That said, don't let it stop you from taking on this project. If you run into trouble on it, I'll be happy to help you with it. I'm never too far from my keyboard. Email me at bythehook7674 (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Hi Dot,
I'm a fairly new crochet-er. What level would you rate this patter? Beginner; Easy; Intermediate; Experienced?

I would love to buy one of the ponytail hats from someone. I can't seem to find one in my area and I don't know how to knit.

Hi Magaly, it's all right that you keep contacting me here, I don't mind at all, but you can also email at bythehook7647 @ yahoo . com I love hearing from you.

I'm glad the Eastwoodly is turning out so nicely for you. Your idea for the scarves sounds like it would work. Let me know how it turns out if you try it.

Hello Dot,
How are you? Is it alright that I keep writing to you on this post? I am not too computer savvy and am not sure if it is ok. I enjoy it and you are so knowledgeable and generous with your knowledge! I am almost done with my Eastwoodly hat! It is coming out so nice! It is a perfect size and nice and stiff so it holds its shape and doesn't squash my hair too much!LOL. I was thinking of crocheting like 2 long mini-scarves in a matching color that I could attach to the inside of the hat. They could serve several purposes: act as kind of ear muffs because they would come down over the ears, they would tie under the neck to keep the neck warm, keep the hat from flying off on windy days and best of all hide my double chin!LOL They could be made in a double crochet so they come out soft and not stiff. What do you think? Have a wonderful day!

Oh, Magaly, what a generous daughter you have. She sounds so cute. Now her friend has a beautiful hat made by you.

Holding 2 strands together will make the hat larger, but it's doable.
You might want to try hdc instead of dc. Your Eastwoodly is going to be beautiful! I wish I could see it.

My wrist is much, much better now. Thank you for asking. I learned my lesson. I will take frequent breaks and let my arm rest.

Hello Dot,
I hope you are well and your wrist is feeling much better! My daughter Olivia gave her pony tail hat to her best friend in school because the little girl liked it so much! That is ok because I had told her I could make one for her friend if she liked it. Now my daughter wants me to make her another one and I was thinking of making it using two strands of WW yarn because it is so cold where I live! The other day it felt like -17 with the wind chill!! What do you think? Would that be too bulky?
I have also started on the Eastwoodly hat using black for the body and "Painted Desert" variegated for the band. So far so good and having fun! Take care of yourself and feel better soon!

Hi Magaly. Your daughter's hat sounds beautiful, I can just imagine how it looks with the purple hat and varigated poof. I know she went to school proud this morning. What a good Mom you are! The hat should fit a little snug, but not too tight. If you find it's a too snug, try using a larger hook on your next one.

Dear Dot,
Good morning! How are you today? My daughter Olivia wore her pony tail hat to school today! I had to get up early to finish up the last few rows because she wanted to wear it to school badly! It came out a little snug even though I added a few stitches, but I think it is supposed to be a little snug on the head, isn't it? It looks like the one that Julie made and is modeling in your Hall of Fame photo album. It shows off the stitches very well that way- what do you think? She loves purple so I made it in that color with a variegated "poof" that also had some purple in it. I will be starting on the Eastwoodly hat next. Have a wonderful weekend!!!!!

As much as Chrissy deserves to have a new pair of pants, I think your daughter would be prefer you make her hat next. Sorry you can't post pictures yet, but I'd love to hear how she likes the hat.

Dear Dot,
Thank you for the suggestion about using a bigger hook- I will try that first! Unfortunately, I don't have the means of posting pictures at this time, but I am working on. Now that Chrissy doll has the hat, she needs the drawstring baby pants to match...or should I make my daughter's hat next? LOL So many awesome patterns that you have given us, I can't choose!!! Thank you again!

Hi Magaly. Sorry your hat turned out too small, but I'm sure Chrissy Doll is enjoying it. You might want to try an I or J hook to make the hat larger. I'm glad to hear the hat was easy to make. Let me know how the Eastwoodly hat works out for you. I'd love to see a picture of your daughter modeling her hat.

Hello Dot,
How are you? I wanted to let you know that I made the pony tail hat for my 7 year old daughter this morning. It is so simple to make and the "poof" is so adorable! However, it came out too small probably because I am a tight crocheter. So now my Baby Chrissy doll that I have had since I was about 12 (I am 40 now!) has a new beautiful hat and I will make another for my daughter and just add a few more stitches. I want to tackle the Eastwoodly hat next, even though I am not a hat wearer, because this hat seems really attractive! Thank you for sharing your talents so generously!
