Adult Size: 22 1/2" to 24"
MATERIALS:
I hook
Approximately 8 oz. Red Heart Super Saver ww yarn, color, Red or color of choice
Scissors
Yarn Needle
GAUGE: 6 rows=2" and 6 scs=2"
ABBREVIATIONS USED:
ch = chain
cbs = crossed bar stitch
sc = single crochet
scs = single crochets
ea = each
st = stitch
sts = stitches
sl st = slip stitch
sp = space
yo = yarn over
hdc = half double crochet = yarn over hook, insert hook in designated stitch, yarn over hook and pull yarn through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over hook and pull yarn through all 3 loops on hook.
SPECIAL STITCHES:
cbs = crossed bar stitch = Crossed Bar Stitch - yo, insert hook in st or sp indicated, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo insert hook in next st or sp indicated, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yo draw thru all 5 loops on hook - crossed bar stitch made.
Reverse hdc = reverse half double crochet = yarn over hook, insert hook in stitch to the right of the hook, yarn over hook and pull yarn through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over hook and pull yarn through all 3 loops on hook.
NOTE 1: Numbers in ( ) at the end of the rows is not a part of the instructions, it is simply stating the number of stitches you have at the end of that row.
NOTE 2: Do not join rounds unless instructed to do so. Place a marker in the first stitch of each round for round count. Move the marker up each round.
NOTE 3: Chain 2 at beginning of rounds 14 thru 17 does not count as a stitch, it's for height only.
WORK ENTIRE PATTERN HOLDING 2 STRANDS TOGETHER
ROUND 1: ch 2, 8 sc in first ch. do not join (8 sc)
ROUND 2: 2 sc in ea st around. (16 sc) place a marker in first st for row count. Move marker up in ea round.
ROUND 3: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (24 sc)
ROUND 4: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (32 sc)
ROUND 5: *1 sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (40 sc)
ROUND 6: * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 sts. Repeat from * around. (48 sc)
ROUND 7: 1 sc in ea st around. (48 sc)
ROUND 8: * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 5 sts. Repeat from * around. (56 sc)
ROUND 9: *1 sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around. (64 sc)
ROUND 10: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 7 sts, Repeat from * around. (72 sc).
Piece measures 7 1/2" across from edge to edge, and 23 3/4" around at end of round 10. Do fewer increase rows for a smaller hat.
WORK IN BACK LOOPS FOR ROUND 11 ONLY
ROUND 11: sl st in next st, place marker in sl st, sc in back loop only of ea st around. End with sc in back loop of the sl st. Do Not Join. (72 sc)
ROUND 12 thru 13: Work in both loops. 1 sc in ea st around. Join with sl st in first sc. (72 sc)
cbs = crossed bar stitch = Crossed Bar Stitch - yo, insert hook in st or sp indicated, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo insert hook in next st or sp indicated, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yo draw thru all 5 loops on hook - crossed bar stitch made.
ROUND 14: ch 2, *cbs, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join in the first ch-1 space of the round. (36 cbs)
[Start the first cbs in the same st as the join. The next cbs always starts in the same stitch (or space) where the previous cbs ended.The final cbs of the round ends in the same stitch as the first cbs of the round.]
ROUNDS 15 thru 17 are worked in ch-1 spaces of previous rounds.
ROUND 15 thru 17: ch 2, *cbs, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join in first ch-1 space of round for rounds 15 and 16. Join in the top of the first cbs for round 17. (36 cbs)
Tip: when you come to the stitch with the chain 2, place your stitch between the chain 2 and the first cbs stitch, then complete the stitch you're working on. This will hide the chain 2.
ROUND 18: ch 1, sc in same space as join, *1 sc in next st, 1 sc in next sp. Repeat from * around. Do Not Join. Place marker in first stitch for row count.
ROUND 19: 1 sc in ea st around.
ROUND 20: WORK IN FRONT LOOPS ONLY FOR THIS ROUND. * 1 sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (84 sc)
ROUND 21: 1 sc in ea st around. (84 sc)
ROUND 22: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 6 sts. Repeat from * around. (96 sc)
ROUND 23: 1 sc in ea st around. (96)
ROUND 24: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 7 sts. Repeat from * around. (108 sc)
ROUND 25: 1 sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, *1 sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. End with 1 sc in next 4 sts. (120 sc). sl st in next st.
ROUND 26: ch 2, 1 reverse hdc in ea st around. (120 reverse hdc)
Reverse hdc = yo, insert hook in next st to the right, yo, pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook) yo, pull thru all 3 loops.
Tip: Reverse hdc is very awkward, but it gets easier as you do it.
Fasten off and weave in ends
Embelish with the White Twinkle Choker, just make the straps long enough to tie in back and hang down.

Dot, Im so sad!!! I fell in love with your western style hat and used red heart super saver color of my choice. I finished it and could get a little "character" out of the brim but it left alot to be sesired. I thought maybe if I thew it into the washer and dryer it may re whatever the yarn and maybe that would be my answer. What I seem to have is a pill box type hat with a very floppy unmanageable brim. Any suggestins to lift my heart? Since I am very new to rhd crochet maybe this is my issue but I am so discouraged.

Hi Dot, Your creations are so very unique! Thank you. I'm stuck on the Crossed bar stitch in the Giddy Up hat. At the end of Round 17, I've ended up with way over 100 stitches and obviously am doing something wrong. Here's my question: If the CBS is completed using 2 stitches, then you chain one and start the next CBS in the same stitch as the last stich you left off on, then isn't that why I've ended up with so many stitches? I am wondering if I should be skipping a space, i.e., YO, insert and pull up 3 on hook, YO, insert in next stitch and pull up, totaling 5 on the hook, then YO and draw thru all 5 loops on hook, chain 1, skip next stitch, do CBS in next stitch? I've searched all over the internet for further CBS instructions and can find none. The website you refer to is not in service anymore. Where is a good website where one can find how to's on many unique stitches? Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks, Mindy

Hi Kathy, I'm glad you like my patterns. I'm sorry, I don't know what you're talking about when you say an "adult egyptian hat" it sounds intriguing.
 | | | Kathy October 4, 2005 01:11 PM PDT
Dot I really like your work.
You have an excellent skill in making patterns and projects right from your head, I specially like the hgiddy-up hats.But I was wondering is there anyway you could make a real looking adult egyptian hat? I seen one on beanie-babies but not an adult one,and no body has a free pattern, right nowKeep up the great work. irishsilverwing@yahoo.com

Hi Ccpost, Good, I'm glad it works, I hate when a pattern is written so vaguely that it's hard to figure out what to do next. Thank you again for bringing this to my attention. I'll be able to fix it and save some future crocheters from pulling out their hair and cussing at me. lol
You're welcome, I do enjoy sharing my patterns.

Hello...thanks...that does work out right now, lol...while I was waiting, I actually did try that, and so I was hoping that that was what I was supposed to do, and it was, so that was nice...lol...I have a couple other patterns printed out so I can try them, and I just wanted to say thank you for sharing all your patterns with everyone. I have 4 children, 3 of which are 4 yrs and under, so I do a lot of watching them and sitting with them while they play...so in between, I crotchet. Thanks again, and yes it is working.

CCPost, I left out the chain 1 that should follow the "pull thru all 5 loops on hook".
 | | | Dot May 16, 2005 11:08 AM PDT
Hi CCPost, I'm flattered you like my patterns enough to keep doing them.
I'm sorry the instructions for the CBS rounds are so vague. I'll re-write them to try to make it clear what to do. In the mean time, try this:
yo, insert hook in same st as join, yo, pull yarn through st (3 loops on hook), skip the next st, yo, insert hook in st after skipped st, yo, pull yarn through st (5 loops on hook), yo pull yarn through all 5 loops on hook. Join the round in the first CH-1 SPACE of the round.
For following rounds, yo, insert hook in same SPACE as join, yo, pull yarn through SPACE (3 loops on hook), skip the next st, yo, insert hook in SPACE after skipped st, yo, pull yarn through SPACE (5 loops on hook), yo pull yarn through all 5 loops on hook. Join the round in the first CH-1 SPACE of the round.
I hope this helps, if not, let me know and I'll try it again. I'd love to know how your hat turns out.
I'm glad you brought this to my attention so I can clarify the instructions. Thank you.

Hi Dot, I have made two Honeycomb hats, and four of the Sassy hats, and I am attempting the Giddyup-Go one now....I am stuck on the cbs now, I understand how to do the stitch, but coming up with twice the amount indicated... which spaces am I supposed to be going into....I do have the 72 sc, and have chained 2, now where do I go...like I said, I am coming up with like 72 cbs's rather than 36....help please....

I have been looking for a hat just like this. I am going to try making it. I am so excited that I have found you.
 | | | Dot April 24, 2005 02:20 PM PDT
Thank you Louise. If you use the smaller yarns and a smaller hook, it would turn out the same, but, I don't know if it would hold its shape. You need a stiffer yarn to hold the shape. If you do try it, I'd love to hear how it turns out.
 | | | Louise April 24, 2005 01:04 PM PDT
I love the hat and would like to make a chid size version,if I use sport or baby yarn would it come out the same?
 | | | Dot April 11, 2005 06:10 PM PDT
Hi Diana, Glad you like the hats. I try to keep my patterns a little on the unusual side. I got tired of making the same "skully" over and over again. Enjoy the pattern and share a picture if you can, I'd love to see your finished project.
