hi. here is how another person does the bill. Maybe this will help you if you ever make one.
Lilly
this is part of a pattern by by JRCLDesigns, SITE IS http://www.freewebs.com/jrcldesigns/free_patterns/newsboycap.htm

PEAK/BILL
Join with sl st(sc) in first unworked front loop on band. Sc(dc) in each unworked front loop, 24 sts. Then sc(dc) in front loops of next 24 sts on bottom band. You should now have a small pocket formed on front. Mark this last st as beg of round.

Rnd 1: Sc(dc) in each st around. Move marker up.

Rnd 2: Work dec over next 2 sts and next 2 sts. *Sc(dc) across to last 3 sts on top. Work dec over next 2 sts and next 2 sts. Sc(dc) in next st on side**. Work dec over next 2 sts and next 2 sts. Repeat from * to **.

Repeat Rnd 2 twice more. You should have 12 sts on top and bottom of pocket.

Working through both thicknesses, sc(dc) these 12 together to close. Finish off. Weave in ends.

Hi Margo, try it with baby weight yarn and a C D or E hook. I don't know any other way to make it tiny baby sized.

Hi Berni, this stumped me too the first time I ran across it in a pattern.
Is it supposed to be a chain of 5 that you work...
Yes, do not break off at the end of round 24, just make your chain 5 and turn so you can do sc's in that ch 5.

does it ever get attached to the hat??...
yes. when you sc down the chain you will be back to the edge of the hat (row 24). That's where you will make a sl st in the st on row 24 of the hat where the chain 5 started, and sl st in the next st on row 24.
turn and sc back up the sc's you just made, turn and sc back down the sc's you just made. Always working in the back loops only.
You will continue working up then turn and work back down then sl st to hat and turn and work up then back down and sl st to hat. Keep doing this around the entire hat and then slip st the edges together.

OK, then, did I manage to make it even more confusing? I hope not, let me know

Hi Dot
I am trying to finish this pattern up, but I am confused!! Dog gone it!
I am starting on the ribbing, but I am not sure what is going on with that. Is it supposed to be a chain of 5 that you work, does it ever get attached to the hat?? See... I told you I am confused! I would love to finish this for the weekend. It is cold and rainy here.
Thanks for anything you can do for me.

Hi Audrey. Good questions. I think I joined rounds in both loops, but I'm not sure. You should be OK if you pick one way or the other and just keep it consistent. Look at the way your rounds are joining and if you don't like it, tear it out and try it the
other way. The hole in the top of the hat is natural. When I start my hat, I chain 2 and work 12 single crochets in the first sc, working OVER the tail, than after I finish the hat, if the hole's too large I pull the tail and it closes the hole. Then just weave it in securely so the hole will stay closed.

The first round is worked all in the first chain stitch, so there isn't a front loop or back loop on the first round. Start working in back loops only with round 2.

Hope this helps you.

i just start this pattern, but i think i did something wrong cause I've got a hole in the middle.
do I have to work in back loops also for the first round? And when I Join, I also have to join in the back loop?
Thanks for you help Dot.

Hi Windi. This hat does run a little on the large side. If you want to try this pattern, you might try it with a smaller hook and maybe only 1 strand of yarn instead of 2. I know you'll get a smaller hat, but how small, I don't know. You might end up with a doll size hat. Here's a link to a site that explains how to make a beret. With this information, you could make a custom beret for your daughter.

Hope this helps.

Dot, I am looking for a child's size version of this type hat - would you have any suggestions? I've searche and searched and can't find anything. THank you - these all look great - but my daughter is a very petite 11 year old and I think this one would swallow her whole - she has said she definitely wants a beret style hat.
