Materials:
J hook
size 50 Broomstick Lace Pin
Red Heart Super Saver approximately 2 oz.

Adult size: 23"

Gauge: 1 group of the broomstick lace = 1" across by 1.5" tall (approximately)
6 hdc = 2"
2 rows of hdc = 1"
abbreviations used:
ch – chain
tr – treble crochet – yo twice, insert hook in designated stitch, yo, pull thru stitch, yo,
(pull thru 2 loops), 3 times
pin – broomstick lace pin – tool used to make the broomstick lace
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
hdc – yo , pull up a loop, yo draw thru all 3 loops on hook
sk – skip
dec – decrease – yo, insert hook in designated stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook in
next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw thru all 5 loops


ROW 1: (ch 4, tr in 4th ch from hook) 15 times.

ROW 2: ch 1, working around the post of the trebles of the previous row, 5 sc in next tr
to end of row. (75 sc)

BROOMSTICK LACE ROWS
 
ROW 3 (first half of broomstick lace): place loop from last sc of row 2 over the
broomstick pin, pull yarn to make it snug on pin, but don't "choke" it. Now, working in
back loops only of the sc's, *insert hook in next sc, pull up a loop, place loop over pin.
Repeat from * to end of row. (75 loops)

ROW 4 (second half of broomstick lace): insert hook under 5 loops and carefully remove
them from the pin. yo, pull loop thru all 5 loops on hook, ch 1, 5 sc in the same 5 loops.
*Insert hook under next 5 loops and carefully remove from pin, 5 sc in these loops.
Repeat from * until all loops have been worked off pin. (15 groups of 5 loops and 75 sc)
insert hook under 5 loopscarefully remove loops5 sc in loops
Join with a sl st to first sc.

Begin working in rounds on row 5

ROW 5: sl st in next sc, sc in next st, *ch 3, sk 4 sc, sc in next st, repeat from * around.
Join with sl st in first sc. (15 ch-3 spaces)

ROW 6: ch 1, sc in same st as join, 4 sc in next ch-3 sp, *sc in next sc, 4 sc in next ch-3
sp. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in first sc. (75 sc) Fasten off

Next row is worked in the ch-4 loops of the first row.

ROW 7:  Attach yarn in first ch-4 loop, ch 1, 5 sc's around the chain, *5 sc around next
chain, repeat from * around, join with sl st in first sc. (75 sc)

ROW 8: sl st in next st, ch 2, hdc in same st as sl st, hdc in next 3 sts, *sk next st, hdc in
next 4 sts. Repeat from * around.  Join with sl st in first hdc. (60 hdc)

ROW 9: ch 1, sc in same st as join, ch 4, sk next 4 sts, *sc in next st, ch 4, sk next 4 sts.
Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in first sc. (12 ch-4 spaces)

ROW 10: ch 1, *4 sc in next ch-4 space, sk next sc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st
in first sc. (48 sc)

ROW 11: ch 2, hdc in same st as join, hdc in ea st around. Ignoring ch 2, join with sl st in
first hdc. (48 hdc)

ROW 12: repeat row 11. (48 hdc)

ROW 13: ch 1, sc in same st as join, ch 3, sk next 3 sts, *sc in next st, ch 3, sk next 3 sts.
Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in first sc. (12 ch-3 spaces)

ROW 14: ch 1, *3 sc in next ch-3 space, sk next sc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st
in first sc.

ROW 15: sl st in next st, ch 2, hdc in same st as sl st, hdc in next st, *sk next st, hdc in
next 2 sts. Repeat from * around.  Join with sl st in first hdc. (24 hdc)

ROW 16: ch 2, yo, insert hook in same st as join, yo, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook in
next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw thru all 5 loops on hook, dec made. hdc in next st,
*yo, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop, yo,
draw thru all 5 loops, hdc in next st. Repeat from * around. (16 hdc)

ROW 17: ch 2, yo, insert hook in same st as join, yo, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook in
next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw thru all 5 loops on hook, *yo, insert hook in next st,
pull up a loop, yo, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop, yo, draw thru all 5 loops. Repeat
from * around. (8 hdc)

Leaving a long tail, fasten off. Weave tail through the 8 stitches of row 17 and pull tight
to close the hole. Secure and weave in ends.

Using the beginning tail, stitch the beginning rows together, secure and weave in ends.

Thanks Anita. I suggest you use smaller hook, try an H and see how that works. After row 1 you could see if it fits around her head the way you want it to. If it's too tight, try a larger hook. If it's too loose, try a smaller hook. That's what I'd do if I were making it for a child. Hope this helps.

hi Dot

love this pattern (as does my 7 year old) i am not that good at changing patterns... do you know how i would decrease the size of this to fit a child?

I am not much in crocheting or knitting but I have always liked the broomstick lace and now I have found instructions and am going to give it a try.
