Pat do you know of a pattern link that has beanies or hats for boys and girls ages from 2yrs and older?
 | | | ali January 3, 2007 12:34 AM PST

Dear Dot,
Going to visit my friend in London tomorrow and whipped up this hat in two hours to take as a present. Used Debbie Bliss, Maya. Sorry no digital camera. But take my word for it, it is beautiful. I don't know why you call it an UBW Hat. It is lovely, and I am sure my friend will love it. Thank you so much for the pattern. So generous of you to share with everyone.
Warm regards,
Ramani | |

Thank you, Dot. You found my error--I was going into the chain, rather than the first dc to start each round. This was leaving some big holes! You can tell I'm new at crocheting, although I've been knitting for years. I love your patterns and can't wait to make one of the shawls to send to a friend in Hong Kong. I've been looking for a lacy pattern, and you have some great ones to choose from. You are so kind to share your creativity and enthusiasm. Thank you!

Hi Pam, when you ch 2, that's 1, then you do 2 dc in same place, that's 3, then you do 2 in each of the remaining 10 sts, that's 23, then you do one in the join from the previous round, that's 24. Hope this helps. If that's still confusing you, then just do it the way you suggested, as long as you end up with 24 stitches it's OK.

Hi Dot, I'm trying to make this hat with 1 strand of ww and a K hook, since our weather is so mild. I don't understand row 2--if you ch 2 as one dc, 2 dc in the join, 2 dc in each of the 11 from round one, and another dc when you come back around--isn't that 26 total? I tried ch 2 and one dc in the join, then 2dc in the 11 from round one to get 24. Is that right?

Thanks, Susan. It's my favorite pattern for charities. I think your idea of sending to the hurricane survivors is terrific. Keep up the good work.

Love the pattern! I've made over thirty of these (still have loose ends to weave in on some) and am sending them to Mississippi to hurricaine survivors still living in tents and cars...

You're welcome, Hannah, I'm glad to hear how popular this hat is with your friends and family. It's my favorite hat pattern too. Who knows, maybe someday I'll get around to trying my hand at a newsboy hat. Thanks for your vote of confidence. Happy holidays to you and yours.

Hi again.
I just want to tell you how much I LOVE this pattern. I've made so many of these hats for birthdays and gifts for all my friends. they loved them. Thanks so much for this pattern.
Hannah
PS. I really think(when you have some time on your hands) you should try making one of those newsboy caps. I'm sure you could make up a really easy pattern. There are no good patterns out there. If you ever get around to it I'd love to see your pattern. Well, thanks for all your other great patterns!

Hi Bev, I made this hat for my entire family last year and the only thing different I did for the children (2 1/2 to 9) was shorten the pattern by 1 hdc round. The beauty of this pattern, to me, is that it fits anyone. You've already been making adjustments to it by making it shorter and longer, so you're on your way.
 | | | bev November 29, 2005 11:34 AM PST
want to make this for a 5 yr old not sure how to adjust pattern. have made a lot of these for chemo caps they work up fast , i make mine longer as my sister asked they cover her ears/neck on others they just roll the rim

Hi Jill. You're welcome. Sounds like you've been very busy. I love this pattern myself and always make bunches of them for charity, family, friends and myself. I've actually started using an N hook.
 | | | Jill October 16, 2005 09:35 PM PDT
Thank you, Dot, for the great pattern! I found it here just over a week ago and have made 5 of these hats already (3 for me, 2 for gifts). It's so straightforward to make, and was just what I was looking for! I've customized it a tiny bit, extending it a few rows to cover my ears and have a wide brim, and it's just my style. (Thanks also for providing me a reason to get a large hook--I'm a relative beginner, and didn't have one till I saw this pattern.)

Hi Hannah, thanks for your endorsement of the pattern. Way to go on finishing 2 a day. I love this pattern because it does work up so fast. Happy hookin'.
 | | | Hannah September 26, 2005 08:16 AM PDT
i just realized that the pattern is dc. i thought it was sc. sorry!!!
 | | | Hannah September 26, 2005 08:14 AM PDT
this hat also works VERY WELL, with an N hook and 1 strand of ww yarn.
oh, and dc along with all that other stuff. I finished 2 a day using an
n hook, 1 strand ( or 2) ww yarn and dc. well hope this might help someone one

Would like to be able to see the UBW hat in a closer up picture...8-)

Well, it probably could, Teresita, but remember, the smaller hook and thinner yarn will give a smaller hat. You would need to do 2 or 3 more increase rows and maybe a few more even rows.
 | | | Teresita January 22, 2005 05:48 PM PST
I am also looking for patterns for chemo caps. This one seems nice and thick in this winter and cold season. Can it be made with lightweight yarn and change the hook accordingly...like sport yarn or some of the newer yarns that are very light? Teresita
 | | | Dot December 31, 2004 09:52 PM PST
It's pretty thick and warm. It might be OK for a chemo hat during the winter.
 | | | Yogie December 31, 2004 09:00 PM PST
How will this work for a chemo hat?
