I am new to crochet and knit, I learned both within the last month and I was able to make this hat yesterday with little problem. I have "Crochet for Dummies" and had to learn the dtr and I did have to check out your tutorial for row 6 but you made it so easy for me. I think I used a light weight worsted so the hat turned out a little small so I added another row 6 and some dc rows to make it the size I wanted.

Thank you so much for patterns a rank amateur like myself can follow,,,, Lizzy

p.s. I am making hats/scarves for a local church so I think someone is going to love this one (and I do too and am going to make one for myself)

Just found your websidte quite by accident, and it was just what I was looking for.....HATS....Hve been busy busy crocheting these hats. My thought was to make these and give to some organization that gives hats to the needy to keep their heads warm in the winter. Your patterns are so easy to follow and quick to make. Thanks...Norma

I was working on this pattern from the 2006 crochet pattern a day calendar. I didn't think row 6 was going right, but I muddled through, and when I got to row 7, I /knew/ it wasn't right. I am so happy you have the pattern online, so I can finish the hat.

They really messed up your instructions when they printed that calendar. All of the flower stitch parts are listed as dc instead of dtr, and on row 6 they have you making the first part in the 3rd instead of 6th chain! Arrgh!

I had made this pattern once before, using your website, but I decided to use the calendar one just out of convenience. That'll teach me :)

I really do love this pattern, and since my name is liz, I feel a little like it was made for me!

Dot, I made this hat last night and your directions that you took pictures of helped so much. I haven't been crocheting for very long and I felt so proud that I did this beautiful hat. I plan on giving it to someone in my family for Christmas. Thanks for the pattern! (flower hat)
Blessings to you,
Lori

Hi Gail, I'm glad you liked this pattern, it's one of my favorite. Your changes sound like they really set off the edging around the face. I'd love to see pictures. Happy hookin' from one "old crocheter" to another.

Hi Dot, I'm an 'old' crocheter :-) I love your hat patterns and have made several of them. Last night I quickly made up your Flower hat, and it's just wonderful! For my head, with long hair, I added an extra row of sc to the edge, and then a picot row. Your pattern is so lovely that I didn't want to do anything to ruin its symmetry. But the picot row worked out well and complimented the pattern. Thank you so much for all your creative patterns. Now I'm off to make your Cowboy Hat!

Thank you Lorien, what a nice compliment. I like your idea of the hearts around the hat, but I don't have any idea how to do it. I hope you figure it out.

Thank you so much for the beautiful pattern. I whipped up this one last night. Your patterns are a pretty (if not prettier) than those I find in any book! I am trying to think of a way to do a heart chain all of the way around instead of the flowers - I have young twin sisters-in-law who would love that. Seen any stiches like this anywhere that I could adapt to this pattern?? Thank you again!!

Hi Anna. Thank you. Did you see the link to the tutorial on the pattern. Take a look at the tutorial and make sure you did row 6 right. Place your stitches in the ch 1 that closed the cluster (the eye of the stitch).

Hi Dot,
I love the way this pattern looks, but I don't think I'm doing row 7 right. My flowers come out with only 5 petals. Any suggestions?

hi. i am working on the flower hat and have done row 6 but i have 2 extra stitches between the clusters, is this supposed to happen? the other rows had the correct numbers of stitches. also, the flowers look crooked when i do the clusters in the 6th chain. should i be doing them in the stitch that connects the clusters? any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Kawehi, it's good to see someone your age interested in crocheting. I'm not sure if I can help you, but here's links to my favorite sites to learn about crocheting.

Stitchguide
http://www.stitchguide.com/stitches/crochet/index.html

Crochet Cabana
http://www.crochetcabana.com/index.htm

Both sites have great instructions and detailed pictures, but stitchguide has videos showing how to do the stitch. Good luck with your learning.

Hi Meg, your hat sounds lovely. I'd love to see pictures when you get them posted. Thanks letting me know about row 7, I'll have to make the hat again so I can see where the join needs to be, and to tell you the truth, I don't even understand my own note now, so I'll have to do something about that too.

I'm still wearing my brace most of the time, but have started using my hand a little more each day. The pain and numbness are getting less and less.

I've never made a sweater for Spike, I'm not sure he would wear one, but I've been tempted to try my hand at it. I've got a few other things I'd like to get done before I start thinking canine designs.

I hope your hat was a hit. I'm sure it looked very cute on you.

I've been watching your sites for a few months now, but haven't had the chance to work up a pattern until now! Instead of using a ww yarn I used Lion Brand's Jiffy faux mohair yarn in "Baby Blue," it turned out fine!
I plan on wearing it to my classes & the bowling alley tomorrow & hopefully I'll get the chance to post some pictures of it on my blog.
One note though, at the end it got a little confusing as to joining Row 7 together, as there wasn't a note to in the last step... but in Row 8 it sounded as if there was a join, so I joined them. It looks and feels great, thank you!

I'm sorry about your tendonitis, my doctor saw me crocheting in the waiting room about a year and a half ago when I was 15 and he warned me that it could happen to me in the near future if I'm not careful with taking breaks from crocheting... as I have been crocheting since I was 10. Every now and then I hear a clicking in my wrist from the repetitive movements, and I can't crochet during badminton season or I get carpal tunnel. You be safe, that wrist needs to rest up so it will have many more years of crocheting!

I'd like to see a dog sweater pattern with your creative-Pat touch, I know Spike wont mind, and neither will my dogs!
Take Care!
-Meg

Thank you, Mae Moss. I'm glad you discovered my site and I'm very happy you like what you see. Sounds like you're going to be a very busy person for awhile. Good luck with all your new projects. I'd love to hear how they turn out. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Dot!

I discovered your site from Lion Brand site and am delighted with it. I just now printed off some goodies and hope to get to one of them soon. I have been crocheting ponchos for Christmas gifts for my three young granddaughters and now their mama's want one too! So I have my work cut out for me, don't I? I once took a beanie hat pattern off of another hat, but didn't write it down so it is GONE. I can't create patterns, I do well to read them, but I surely appreciate those that can. Thank you, Dot for all your work. Mae Moss

Good Morning. well last night, i decided to start on the pontail hat, and actually, i'm almost done. but thanks for all your work though! once i'm done the ponytail hat, i'm gonna give this one another shot. Thanks for everything

The row you're working on right now is what forms the hat. If you've made it through step 5 and it looks like the picture, don't give up now. You've got a very good start to the hardest part of the hat. I think you're doing great for someone who has never made a hat. It'd be a shame for you to stop at this point.

I think you might find the ponytail hat almost as hard as this one, because you have to crochet around a ponytail rubber band to start with and that's not too easy for a beginner.
Dot

OK, Julie, If you've done step 5 and you've now got 1 loop on your hook, start over with step 3 and repeat step 3, step 4, and step 5, until you get all the way around the hat. I think it might be a little wavy, keep going and see what you get.

Ok, i'm having major problems. i'm on Row 6, step 6. and i have no clue how to do it. i looked on the site that has pictures that you gave me, and it doesn't show. i'm on picture 5 on the site. so from that point, how do i continue?

Hi Julie, ch 3 means to chain 3.

Where are you in the pattern. Have you made it thru row 5, or are you having trouble getting started? The flower will not look like a flower until you've completed row 6 and row 7.

I don't like to discourage you, but if you have never made a hat before, this is going to be extremely difficult.
Julie

Hi Julie, I added a list of abbreviations used to the pattern. If you still don't understand the shortcut words, let me know which ones and I'll try to explain them to you. I have a tutorial on my other site that shows how to do row 6. It's a good idea if you take a look at it. I think it will help you out alot. Here's a link to the tutorial. http://bythehook.blogdrive.com/archive/97.html

This is a pretty hard pattern for a newby, but that doesn't mean you can't do it. Let me know if you need any more help.
